Description
Update Feb 2015: I decided to revisit this piece and repainted much of the background. It was only two years old, but I can't believe how sloppy the beach was before I got back to work on it. Backgrounds are definitely what I've improved most on these past few years. I rather enjoyed painting a detailed landscape, actually. I might do another landscape-focused piece sometime.
At long last, here it is. Paradise is complete. Started this back in September and have been working on it very sporadically since. Did the horse in PS Elements 5 (as that was before my upgrade) and the background in CS2. I think I had a plan to finish the whole thing in December, but it got sidelined because of other projects. Took me a little while to find the right ref for the background too - that scenic, idyllic beach that I had in mind. But around February I came back to this, found my ref, and started painting again. I wanted to challenge myself in terms of the scale of the background - normally, the horse is the biggest thing in my art, with a bit of filler. Here I tried to shift the focus a bit, and I think it's the first time I spent longer on the background than the subject. Took a bit longer than usual as I was working on several other paintings at the same time, but I'm happy with how it turned out, overall. There was going to be another palm tree but I kinda ran out of steam.
No textures or special brushes used - everything is hand-painted.
